Xavier Community Education Centre, Bathurst Island, NT

School statement
Xavier Community Education Centre is situated on Bathurst Island 80 km north of Darwin. The school was established by missionaries and later taken over by the Christian Brothers but remained a missionary school until 2007.The school is now run by lay teachers with a commitment to Indigenous education. The school student population is totally indigenous and the secondary school caters for both male and female students from Year 7 to Year 11. The school focuses on encouraging attendance through engagement to further education goals. As a result there are students are making significant progress due to quality teaching and high attendance.Teaching staff are drawn from all over Australia and are supported by Tiwi teaching assistants who provide invaluable support through their interpreting skills and knowledge of student culture and background. Xavier Community Education Centre offers a well rounded curriculum which gives students intensive study in RE, ESL and Mathematics as well as SOSE, Science, Health, PE, Music, Art, Wood Technology , Food Technology and Outdoor Education. Students also receive extra curricula activities such as football and basketball at an interschool level and excursions to the local bush and interstate. Visit the school website.
