Jigalong Remote Community School, Jigalong, WA

School statement
Jigalong is a remote Aboriginal community, 170 kilometres east of Newman on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert in the Pilbara. The people are Martu and self manage their community, striving to maintain their traditional culture and values. The only other government agencies residing in the community are WA Police and the Department of Child Protection who operate from a multi-functional facility. The community has access to television and the internet and receives mail twice weekly. It has a shop, swimming pool, clinic and workshop. Jigalong Remote Community School has an enrolment of about 140 kindergarten, pre-primary, primary and secondary students. The community and school, with the assistance of World Vision, are establishing a 0 to 3 year old facility at the school. The students' first language is Martu Wangka with some proficiency in Aboriginal English. The school aims to develop proficiency in Standard Australian English for its English as a Second Language/Dialect (ESL/D) students. Transciency is a factor of the school population with considerable movement of the local people between Jigalong, Nullagine, Newman, Punmu, Parngurr and Kunawarritji. Visit the school website.
