Kalumburu Remote Community School, Kalumburu, WA

School statement
Kalumburu RCS is located on a very remote part of the northern Kimberley coast. For much of the year the community is cut off by flood waters leaving light aircraft as the only form of transport. Once run as a mission by the Catholic Church, the community is now self directed and administered. The community population remains around 500 with an all Indigenous school enrolment of about 150. The school is focusing on improving literacy and numeracy, and in ensuring student safety, both through well structured school processes and by running programs aimed at improving the students' own self awareness. Significant staff professional development has been undertaken in these areas, supported by the purchase of written materials and highly engaging information technology aimed at building stimulating, safe and happy classroom environments. An effort has also been made to build a community approach to improved attendance, combining a range of whole-school and classroom based incentives, together with direct contact between the school and parents/ carers, supported by an effective School Council. Visit the school website.
