Oombulgurri Remote Community School, Oombulgurri, WA

School statement
Oombulgurri is a small Aboriginal community in northern Western Australia. Its high transience rate influences student attendance and performance. It is geographically isolated by monsoon and terrain; accessible only by air and boat. Social capacity building is needed to lift student outcomes. Infrastructure includes a community store, community council, government agencies and telecommunications. Oombulgurri Remote Community School is a government school for children aged 4 to 17 years of age. Teachers provide pre-primary, primary and modified secondary curriculum. Community members employed at the school (e.g. education assistants and attendance officer) sustain community involvement. Literacy, numeracy and attendance are school priorities. Students speak 'English as a Second Dialect', and work daily to improve their Standard Australian English. Special programs focus on health, community involvement and reducing the effects of isolation. There are four classrooms, a library and office, all of which are air-conditioned. Resources include computers, internet, kitchen, ablutions, covered play areas and grassed playgrounds. The welcoming learning environment encourages community partnership. Visit the school website.
