Tjuntjunjara Remote Community School, Kalgoorlie, WA

School statement
Tjuntjuntjara Remote Community School is located in the Great Victoria Desert close to the South Australian border. Tjuntjuntjara is the traditional home of the 'Spinifex People' or 'Pila Nguru' and is one of the most remote communities in Australia. Its population of 80 to150 residents, can increase or decrease depending on Western Desert cultural cycles. The main language spoken is Pitjantjatjara. A key priority for both the community and the school is the importance of maintaining traditional culture whilst preparing children for a rapidly changing world. The school works hard to provide a meaningful primary and secondary education for children aged 4 to 17, offering a broad curriculum with a strong focus on learning English as a second language. The school experiences strong community support, with elders acting as valued role models and mentors for students. Tjuntjuntjara Remote Community School is proud to be held in high regard by the community and is looked upon as being a friendly and caring community-centred school that encourages excellence and strong values from its students. Visit the school website.
