Yiyili Aboriginal Community School, Fitzroy Crossing, WA

School statement
Yiyili Aboriginal Community School is an independent school in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Yiyili Community is situated 5 km off the Great Northern highway, 170 km north-east of Fitzroy Crossing and 120 km south of Halls Creek. The school caters for students K to 10 from Yiyili and the surrounding outstations: Ganinya, Goolgaradah, Kurinyjarn, Pullout Springs, Rocky Springs and Moongardie. The population of the community and outstations is around 300. In 2009 there are almost 70 students enrolled.The school is governed by a school board, consisting of Yiyili and outstation community members which both determines and oversees the operation of the school. The school is well resourced, clean and tidy and is a source of great pride in the community. Yiyili School encourages an educational relationship among students, staff and parents where communication is open, friendly and invites involvement. Both community members and teaching staff promote an atmosphere of reasonableness and understanding where our young people know they are cherished, in an environment that both supports the wealth of their traditions, and acknowledges equality for all through improved educational outcomes. Visit the school website.
