Durack School is an Independent Public School located in the beautiful suburb of Durack in the city of Palmerston. The school currently caters for 453 preschool and primary students to Year 6. The School became an Independent Public School in 2016 with govenance structure changing from a School Council to a School Board. The school is part of the Palmerston City Schools group who work together to achieve positive outcomes for Palmerston students. Our values are taught to students through the 'You Can Do It!' program which is a social and emotional program designed to enhance wellbeing and positive behaviour. Our students have achieved well academically. Teaching and learning programs are based on the Australian Curriculum and enhanced by programs such as Jolly Phonics and Words Their Way. Preschool students participate in the Early Learning Language Australia program which exposes students to learning a second language (Japanese) through fun apps on iPads. Japanese is taught in classes from Transition to Year 6. Parents and Teachers Targeting Early Readers, Readiness for Learning and Sensory Motor programs are specifically targeted at developing skills in the Early Years. Enrichment / challenge groups are available for students with high potential in Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Computer Coding, and Japanese. Each year students take part and achieve well in competitions eg poetry, science, mathematics, and history.
Specialist teachers teach PE / Health and Dance, Drama and Music. Students participate in a wide variety of sports as part of the PE program and have the opportunity to take part in School Sport Competitions within the region. Golf and Tennis lessons are conducted by professional coaches. The school has a vibrant instrumental music program as well as the opportunity for students to participate in choral activities and the school band.
A Special Education teacher supports children with special needs with Special Education Support Assistants supporting eligible children in classes. A Defence School Transition Aide supports children from Defence Force families, transition into and out of the school. Electronic devices such as Smart boards, laptops and ipads are used as tools to enhance learning.
In 2016 we are hoping to establish an after school tutoring program to suppport children in literacy and numeracy. An Outside School Hours Care program operates to cater for children after hours. The excellence of our teachers has been recognised by regular nominations and awards ieTeachers of Excellence in the National Inspirational Teacher Awards, Territory Teacher of the Year Awards, Microsoft Teacher of the Year.
