Darwin's longest established government school, Parap Primary School, and its adjacent Preschool facility, are located approximately five kilometres from the Darwin central business district. The school has been providing high quality education programs to the Darwin community since 1958, guided by its mission: Working Together, nurturing personal achievement and life-long learning in a learner-centred environment, sustained by explicit values and strong school, family and community partnerships. Our mission is informed by a school-developed Values package, Living Our School Values. The package supports the school's stated values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Excellence and Doing Our Best, Care and Compassion and Collaborative Learning.
In 2013, Parap staff elected to become a registered Kids Matter School. This commitment highlights the staff's belief that a child's sense of belonging is integral to their success at school. Parap's focus on the mental health and well-being of students is sustained through a wide range of programs. Friendly Schools Plus is the corner stone of Parap's anti-bullying program while programs such as Guardian Angels, Kids Hope, Movie Club as well as a school based School Wellbeing Officer all contribute to the development of a supportive and inclusive school community.
As our local area has boomed, Parap has had a steady enrolment growth over the past three years. While our school has grown, the focus on the individual child has sharpened. A school wide internal monitoring database tracks every child's progress in key literacy and numeracy areas, enabling teachers to tailor their program to the individual needs of students. There is a school wide expectation of success for every child as teachers and Administration track the distance that the individual has travelled, monitoring their progress against standardised benchmarks.
Parap teachers are all committed to delivering innovative and rich learning experiences that are informed by the National Curriculum as well as a school wide approach to the teaching of Reading, Spelling and Mathematics. All transition to year 6 students participate in weekly Physical Education, Performing Arts and Library/ICT lessons. A designated Gifted Education Lighthouse School, Parap's Horizons program provides extension, enrichment and support to Gifted and Talented students through both their class work and special projects and initiatives. Parap is fortunate to have a Special Education Teacher and a Literacy Support Teacher who work in partnership to ensure students, teachers and families are all supported in achieving the goals of individual education plans. Students have access to a wide range of enrichment activities, including music instrumental instruction, choirs, Asian Language and Culture studies (Japanese), student leadership and governance, sporting, outdoor education and social and community caring programs. Camp Australia provides an Afterschool and Vacation Care program and Active After School programs are run twice a week to increase student participation in sports and healthy lifestyles.
The school is a foundation partner of Charles Darwin University's Teaching Schools program. This partnership enables Parap to support innovative teacher training and preparation approaches and ensures that our staff continue to remain at the forefront of educational change and innovation. The school welcomes the support and involvement of parents and caregivers in all school activities and we are fortunate to have a highly supportive School Council.
